What do you think you could buy with 175 quadrillion Zimbabwean dollars?

Ever since the Federal Reserve started its quantitative easing program in response to the 2008 financial crisis, we’ve been hearing dire warnings about the threat of hyperinflation. Those warnings, it goes without saying, have not come to pass. In fact, if you want to look at what actual hyperinflation looks like, you should check out…

Foundation: The Christie

My mate Tom (@scatmantom) undertook The Spartan Race earlier this month in Manchester to raise funds for The Christie, a specialist cancer care centre in North West England.

The Christie is one of Europe’s leading cancer centres and treats over 44,000 patients a year. The Christie charity aims to provide additional services and care, over and above what the NHS funds.

Spartan Races are challenging races across rough terrain with added obstacles to climb over and crawl under. I’ve never done one, but think The Krypton Factor meets It’s A Knockout.

Well done lads, looks like you put the fun in fundraiser! If anyone else wants to donate to their efforts you can do so through their Justgiving page.

If you’re raising money for a worthy cause, let me know using through the social media links and I will pick one every month for the Foundation feature (and donate £10)!

Challenge the heteronormative: Pink Moon

Following the recent ruling by the US Supreme Court (SCOTUS) making marriage equality a reality across all 50 states, many questions have been asked in pockets of US society about what this means for them, and how they can get around this ruling (particularly in states which expressly banned same-sex marriage).

Religion, beliefs, bigotry, persecution, hatred, fear, (dis)taste, ignorance, intolerance, narrow-mindedness, media, misconceptions, peer-pressure and anger have all played their part in the reinforcement of the heteronormative idea of marriage between one man and one woman.

Seriously though, why the beef? (more…)

Women in art and life

Women don’t need chauvinism to set them back. They are already doomed by an insurmountable obstacle: each other.

To hear directly from the mouth of the first woman I had respect for that a male Hollywood actor having penetrative sex on screen makes him a dirty bastard is, at best, prudish. To hear the female actor he is sharing the scene with branded a prostitute is astonishing. Quite frankly, 21st century I expected more of you.
Of course if you hadn’t worked it out we were discussing Nymphomaniac, which was released last year. It seems all the fuss was likely for nothing, as the sex was being performed by body doubles. So it’s socially acceptable to be filmed having intercourse, so long as you’re not using your own genitals. Gotcha.

‘We shot the actors pretending to have sex and then had the body doubles, who really did have sex, and in post we will digital-impose the two. So above the waist it will be the star and the below the waist it will be the doubles.’

—Nymphomaniac producer Louise Vesth, talking to the Daily Mail.
